Walking for Economic Empowerment

Tuesday Demetria Smith, candidate for City of Houston Council District D, block walked with her street team in Greater Third Ward neighborhood.

Third Ward is one of the six historic districts in Houston with a mixture of poverty, wealth, artistry, and scholastic.  The Super Neighborhood is home to Texas Southern University and University of Houston and Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Notable past and present residence include:
·         Debbie Allen
·         Phylicia Rashad
·         Shelia Jackson Lee
·         Hobart Taylor
Although Greater Third Ward has a rich history, the average annual household income in Greater Third Ward is just over $27,000 and the historic neighborhood has over 4,000 renters and 1,000 owners (houstontx.gov). Realizing poverty is a significant hindrance within the community; Demetria Smith created an Anti-Poverty Coalition to combat poverty by educating residence of District D on academics, finance, home ownership, and entrepreneurship.  With the aid of community leaders, pastors, business owners, and financial intuitions Mrs. Smith has developed coalition of leaders armed and ready to fight poverty.
