Sunnyside Night Out

Tuesday October 1, Sunnyside Mayor, local officials, police and firefighters were in attendance for National Night Out. Also in attendance was Demetria Smith, Houston City Council Candidate for District D. Not only did Demetria Smith provide financial and business advice for some of the attendees but she took some time out to line dance with a few attendees.

The introduction of National Night Out, “America’s Night Out Again
st Crime”, in 1984 began an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. NATW’s National Night Out program culminates annually, on the first Tuesday of August (In Texas, the first Tuesday of October).

The Miseducation of Affordable Care Act (Obama Care)

In March 2010, President Obama signed comprehensive health reform, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), into law. The law makes preventive care—including family planning and related services—more accessible and affordable for many Americans.  While some provisions of the law have already taken effect, many more provisions will be implemented in the coming years.

Now the law has passed many residents still lack full understanding of the Affordable Care Act, leaving room for fabrication and false information.

Last night Jimmy Kimmel showed viewers citizens lack of knowledge surrounding the Affordable Care Act by randomly asking people on the street if they prefer Obama Care or the Affordable Care Act.

Unfortunately, Texas is one of 26 states who doesn't  facilitated the Health Insurance Marketplace, however, The Health Insurance Marketplace will be operated by the federal government. The federal DHHS will collaborate with the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) to properly coordinate the referral of applicants between the Texas Health Insurance Marketplace and the comission's own application system for Medicaid and CHIP (which Texas will retain control over) (Covertexasnow.org).   Residents can educate themselves on the Affordable Care Act (Obama Care) by visiting the following sites:
