Sunnyside Night Out

Tuesday October 1, Sunnyside Mayor, local officials, police and firefighters were in attendance for National Night Out. Also in attendance was Demetria Smith, Houston City Council Candidate for District D. Not only did Demetria Smith provide financial and business advice for some of the attendees but she took some time out to line dance with a few attendees.

The introduction of National Night Out, “America’s Night Out Again
st Crime”, in 1984 began an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. NATW’s National Night Out program culminates annually, on the first Tuesday of August (In Texas, the first Tuesday of October).

The Miseducation of Affordable Care Act (Obama Care)

In March 2010, President Obama signed comprehensive health reform, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), into law. The law makes preventive care—including family planning and related services—more accessible and affordable for many Americans.  While some provisions of the law have already taken effect, many more provisions will be implemented in the coming years.

Now the law has passed many residents still lack full understanding of the Affordable Care Act, leaving room for fabrication and false information.

Last night Jimmy Kimmel showed viewers citizens lack of knowledge surrounding the Affordable Care Act by randomly asking people on the street if they prefer Obama Care or the Affordable Care Act.

Unfortunately, Texas is one of 26 states who doesn't  facilitated the Health Insurance Marketplace, however, The Health Insurance Marketplace will be operated by the federal government. The federal DHHS will collaborate with the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) to properly coordinate the referral of applicants between the Texas Health Insurance Marketplace and the comission's own application system for Medicaid and CHIP (which Texas will retain control over) (Covertexasnow.org).   Residents can educate themselves on the Affordable Care Act (Obama Care) by visiting the following sites:

Walking for Economic Empowerment

Tuesday Demetria Smith, candidate for City of Houston Council District D, block walked with her street team in Greater Third Ward neighborhood.

Third Ward is one of the six historic districts in Houston with a mixture of poverty, wealth, artistry, and scholastic.  The Super Neighborhood is home to Texas Southern University and University of Houston and Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Notable past and present residence include:
·         Debbie Allen
·         Phylicia Rashad
·         Shelia Jackson Lee
·         Hobart Taylor
Although Greater Third Ward has a rich history, the average annual household income in Greater Third Ward is just over $27,000 and the historic neighborhood has over 4,000 renters and 1,000 owners (houstontx.gov). Realizing poverty is a significant hindrance within the community; Demetria Smith created an Anti-Poverty Coalition to combat poverty by educating residence of District D on academics, finance, home ownership, and entrepreneurship.  With the aid of community leaders, pastors, business owners, and financial intuitions Mrs. Smith has developed coalition of leaders armed and ready to fight poverty.

411 on New Voter ID requirements

In 2011, the Texas Legislature passed Senate Bill 14 (SB 14) creating a new requirement for voters to show photo identification when voting in person.  When a voter arrives at a polling location, the voter will be asked to present one of the seven (7) acceptable forms of photo ID. Election officials will now be required by State law to determine whether the voter’s name on the identification provided matches the name on the official list of registered voters (“OLRV”). After a voter presents their ID, the election worker will compare it to the OLRV. If the name on the ID matches the name on the list of registered voters, the voter will follow the regular procedures for voting. If the name does not match exactly but is “substantially similar” to the name on the OLRV, the voter will be permitted to vote as long as the voter signs an affidavit stating that the voter is the same person on the list of registered voters. If a voter does not have proper identification, the voter will still be permitted to vote provisionally. The voter will have (six) 6 days to present proper identification to the county voter registrar, or the voter’s ballot will be rejected(Vote Texas.gov).

Acceptable forms of identification:

  • Texas Driver’s License
  • Texas Personal Identification Card
  • Texas Concealed Gun License
  • U.S. Passport
  • U.S. Citizenship Certificate with photo
  • U.S. Military ID with photo
*All acceptable forms of identification must be current and not expired.

Pilot Project in District B to Stop Illegal Dumping

With piles of used furniture, yard waste, mattresses and other discarded items serving as the backdrop, Mayor Annise Parker and District B Council Member Jerry Davis kicked off a pilot project to catch those responsible for illegal dumping.  Funding for the project, approximately $250,000, was included in this year’s city budget as a result of an amendment presented by CM Davis.  Five surveillance cameras have been placed at undisclosed locations in Davis’ northeast Houston City Council district (houstontx.gov, 2013).

Southpark, Sunnyside, and Third Ward have suffered with illegal dumping for decades, if the pilot program works in North Houston, hopefully District D's new city council member will fight for surveillance cameras in high dumping areas within District D. Dumping is not only a eye sore for residence but a safety hazard for kids who play around areas that are used for dumping.
